FATHERHOOD is a DJ and production duo formed in 2011 by NYC-based artists Michael Magnan and Physical Therapy dedicated to the research and development of sickening beats. If you live in New York City and dwell amongst the downtown music/fashion scene, chances are you’ve heard of Michael Magnan. The DJ/Producer/Artist – who’s aesthetic appeal is one part homo, one part art- thug – has been turning out parties for what seems like ages and infusing hit songs with his signature brand of musical swag. Magnan fuses art, music and fashiont oget her on his popular blog, Wickephobica and wit h his involvement in the collective, House of Ladosha. The best example of this fusion is Ladosha’s much sought-after t-shirts with an ironic twist on pop culture. Magnan can be found djing at some of the city’s hottest underground parties, with residencies at ‘Vandam’ at Greenhouse and ‘Bassment’ at the Monster.Esoteric mixing is nothing new for Daniel Fisher, who made his name at the popular roving GHE20 G0TH1K party in 2010 and 2011, where he presided alongside fellow deejays Venus X and $hayne. There Fisher and his crew stripped pop songs and filled them with obscure beats, ethnic samples, or whatever else they could find.Fisher differs from his peers by focusing on a slower, more introspective type of dance music meant to be played super loud. In July of 2012, Fisher released his first five-track EP, Safety Net. It featured two dance- floor singles: “Drone On,” with vocals by New York artist-musician Jamie Krasner and “Do It Alone,” an out- of-tune gospel-house track, as well as “Record Sales,” a ‘70’s orchestral song with a classic break beat. He jokes about calling these slower songs “drum ‘n’ space,” his update on the ever-popular British dance music genre. Many of the songs share what Fisher describes as “an end-of-the-night feeling” - a blissed- out, fatigued state that deejays know all too well.
